Henry Head Battery

The Henry Head Battery is an artillery battery located on the northern side of the entrance to Botany Bay at Henry Head, La Perouse, New South Wales.

Constructed between 1892 - 1895, the fort operated until 1910, upon which the fort became obsolete.

The battery and observation posts was re-utilised during World War II to defend the approaches to Botany Bay.

Bare Island

From Congwong Beach

Bare Island is connected by a footbridge to the suburb of La Perouse in South east Sydney. The historic military fort and tunnels can only be visited by guided tour.

The bay at the bottom of the picture is where the whales from yesterdays post were.

Bare Island was part of the traditional land of the Gweagal and Kameygal Aboriginal tribes. In 1770, it was described as ‘a small bare island’ by early explorer, Lieutenant James Cook.

Coastal Hospital Cemetery

The Coast Hospital Cemetery at Little Bay on the northern side of Botany Bay, was first established in the early 1880's and now houses as many as 2000 graves.
It serviced the Coast (Prince Henry) Hospital, originally a smallpox hospital, as people who died of smallpox were required to be buried at the hospital grounds.

The hospital was built far enough from the city to provide quarantine, and for this reason, the hospital in time became an infectious diseases hospital, also treating patients with influenza, bubonic plague, typhoid fever and leprosy. Unfortunately, the cemetery has now fallen into disrepair and many of the grave sites are in poor condition .

Ferry out to sea...

I was a little shocked to see this ferry out to sea, He was out there for a while just going around in circles really. I tried looking on the Sydney Ferry website as to whether they do run whale watching cruises, but found nothing. If you know please tell. Otherwise I guess he took a wrong turn going to or from Manly..

can you see him out there?
