The present lighthouse was established on Nobbys Head Newcastle in 1854, at the mouth to the Hunter River.
It was only the third lighthouse built in NSW after the Macquarie Light in 1818 and the Hornby Light that was also built in 1858.

Newcastle is situated 162 kilometres NNE of Sydney, at the mouth of the Hunter River, it is the predominant city within the Hunter Region.
Famous for its coal, Newcastle is presently the largest coal exporting harbour in the world.
