Goat Island, Western View

SSRE shipyard offers the largest certified slipway facility in New South Wales offering a capacity for a range of vessels up to 650 tons.

• 650 to 1000 ton slipway with main cradle capable of being loaded to 3,400 tons. Suitable for vessels to 65 metres in length x 12.5 metre beam.
•  150 ton slipway, suitable for vessels up to 30 metres
•  20  and 15 ton undercover slipway suitable for vessels up to 45 feet.

SSRE provides deep water and unrestricted navigable access directly to its facility. A berthing wharf with mooring space of approximately 400 metres in length provides excellent in water service capabilities for pre and post refit activities.

Vessels may be berthed directly outside workshops with full service adjacent including shore power, fresh water, compressed air and fire fighting facilities.

Goat Island, up close

Goat Island, west of the Harbour Bridge, was once the fledgling colony's gunpowder store and the source of the sandstone used in some of Sydney's finest buildings. This 5 hectare island was also the headquarters for the Sydney Water Police who kept an eye out for smugglers and escaped convicts. Quarried by convict labour, the stone was also used in the island's own structures, including the superb magazine with walls so thick the temperature inside remains steady, whatever the season. Grisly relics of Goat Island's convict origins remain, including a seat carved out of stone by Charles Anderson, who was sentenced to be tied to the rock for two years. Scratchings made in the guardhouse by bored sentries are also in excellent conditions. 

Goat Island

Goat Island is a rocky island in Sydney Harbour, the island is some 400 m by 200 m in size.

Goat Island lies off the shores of the Sydney suburbs of Balmain and Millers Point, at the junction of Darling Harbour with the main channel of Sydney Harbour. The island is some 400 m by 200 m in size

Over the years Goat Island has served as a quarry, convict stockade, explosives store, police station, fire station, boatyard and film set. Today the island forms part of the Sydney Harbour National Park.
